Summary
- Painful keratosis between the toes
- May be macerated due to perspiration
- Associated with narrow footwear and/or bony deformity
- Occasionally associated with pressure from adjacent toenail
Diagnostic tips
- Pain on lateral pressure
- May be secondary tissue breakdown and sepsis
- Concurrent dermatophyte infection should be considered
- Often predisposed by arthritic and other toe deformities
Tests and Imaging
- Xray may identify osteophyte or exostosis
- Skin scrapings for dermatophyte investigation
Immediate Treatment
- Footwear advice
- Debride hyperkeratosis
- Antiseptics and antifungal agents
- Foam Interdigital pads for protection
Possible Referral
- Podiatry for expert debridement and custom made Interdigital padding
- Orthopeadic surgeon for osteotomy.
