Interdigital Hyperkeratosis

Summary

  • Painful keratosis between the toes
  • May be macerated due to perspiration
  • Associated with narrow footwear and/or bony deformity
  • Occasionally associated with pressure from adjacent toenail

Diagnostic tips

  • Pain on lateral pressure
  • May be secondary tissue breakdown and sepsis
  • Concurrent dermatophyte infection should be considered
  • Often predisposed by arthritic and other toe deformities

Tests and Imaging

  • Xray may identify osteophyte or exostosis
  • Skin scrapings for dermatophyte investigation

Immediate Treatment

  • Footwear advice
  • Debride hyperkeratosis
  • Antiseptics and antifungal agents
  • Foam Interdigital pads for protection

Possible Referral

  • Podiatry for expert debridement and custom made Interdigital padding
  • Orthopeadic surgeon for osteotomy.
